Cheese at Christmas

Cheese lovers know that you can enjoy cheese all year round. It is a food for every season and its wide spectrum of flavours make it a firm favourite with any meal or as a snack.

However, Christmas cheese platters are a firm tradition too. It is hard to picture a Christmas holiday menu without a cheese platter making a major appearance, so why do people love cheese at Christmas so much?

Cheese is the perfect Christmas dessert

Cheese is usually served cold but some varieties, including camembert, can be heated and melted. This flexibility makes cheese an ideal Christmas dessert. Christmas is all about big, powerful and varied, yet complementary flavours. The delightful range of creamy, mild, nutty, spicy and sharp flavours that cheese produce make them an excellent way to polish off a rich meal.

Whether it’s a refreshing cold cheese platter after a hot meal or a melted cheese fondue to warm you up, cheese makes an excellent Christmas dessert.

The problem with sweet, chocolate based desserts is that they can be a little sickly after a large Christmas dinner. The great thing about cheese is that it has many suitable sweet accompaniments such as honey, grapes and jams, while not being as sickly as a fully sweet dessert. It is also a great dessert option for those who love savoury more than sweet foods.

Cheese is perfect with Christmas beverages

Christmas is traditionally a time to consume copious amounts of wine and port. Cheese is the natural accompaniment to wine and port which is a major reason it takes centre stage at Christmas. Cheese can enhance the taste of wine and vice versa and the sweeter cheese accompaniments make it an excellent companion to strong, sweet port.

With its rich salty, savoury flavour, cheese will always be a strong contender on the Christmas menu.
